this thanksgiving morning on "first look," secretary hillary clinton on her way home after working out a cease-fire in the middle east, will it hold? general petraeus's next moves. we have the details. we are here on ""first look" on nbc. happy thanksgiving. i'm veronica de la cruz. the skies over hamas are clear after a cease-fire went into effect hours ago. thousands of people poured into the streets to celebrate the cease-fire. nbc's martin fletcher joins us live with the details. martin, good morning to you.

>> hi, veronica. you said it right in your headlines, the question about the cease-fire, will it hold, that is indeed the question. it went into force at 9:00 in the evening last night. 15 hours later, so far so good. there's been no violations of it. there were a couple sirens in israel and they were false alarms. there were great celebrations in gaza, celebrations by the palestinians what they perceive as their victory over israel. in israel, no such scenes at all. there was no celebrations at all. here, there's a sense there's nothing much to celebrate. even the defense minister said he expects it to be honored but could be a short term cease-fire. the israeli army is beginning a drawdown of its israel armed

troops at the borders being slowly sent home over the next few days and waiting to see if the cease-fire does last. the schools have not yet resumed operation within the south. all schools within 25 kilometers of the gaza border last week have been closed and many children sent north to safety. they still haven't been opened, waiting again to see if the cease-fire really does hold. at the moment, this agreement, there's still a lot to be negotiated on, still a lot to be worked on. the only agreement is quiet for quiet the israelis have stopped attacking and israel has stopped attacking. will it stop assassinating palestinian leaders? will it release its hold and grip on boarder crossings to gaza, also to be negotiated in this same sense, the question is will israel stop -- will israel

stop its attacks on gaza. all waiting to be seen. meanwhile, peace for the time being. veronica. >> that is some good news. martin fletcher live for us this morning from tel aviv. thank you. susan rice speaks out for the first time since calling the attack on benghazi spontaneous. she said she relied solely on evidence from the intelligence community and she reacted to criticism from senator john mccain. >> have great respect for senator mccain and his service to our country. i always have and i always will. i do think some of the statements he's made about me have been unfounded but i look forward to having the opportunity at the appropriate time to discuss all of this with him. meanwhile, in new york city, thanksgiving is already under way. jay gray is with us along the parade route of the 86th annual

macy's thanksgiving day parade. all right, jay, what are you up to now? >> reporter: good morning. you can see the floats lined up behind me on 77. what you see first is hello kitty, one of the newest floats, along with papa smurf. the balloons are lined up. if we come back to street level, you can see the floats lined up as well. everybody is ready to get these things going. it's an exciting morning. part of these floats that will be in the parade this year, we have a float that honors and represents the first responders to hurricane sandy, an important part of the theme of this year's parade. they want to make sure everyone here watching remembers the tragedy a few weeks ago. and everyone will be wearing a lapel pin, part of those rememb remembering those lost in hurricane sandy and remembering there's still a lot

of work to be done here. a big part of that work is getting back to normal and what's more normal than this parade in new york. should be more than 3 million lining the streets and 50 million watching from home. >> you have great weather to go along with it. good news. >> reporter: yes. beautiful. >> thank you. last night on "the ed show," saying he wants obama-care included in talks on the fiscal cliff. he said the courts and american people have already spoken on that subject. >> with regard to the affordable care act, the supreme court, a conservative court at that, has already put its stamp of approval on it. we need to move on. boehner does not want to accept that. i think he is trying to send a message to the tea party he's got something here he wants to continue to fight over. we need to let this go. keep in mind, we voted on this repealing of the act some 37 times already. the american people clearly want

much boat -- better throughout the midwest compared to yesterday. it was pea soup from st. louis to chicago. everyone on the eastern seaboard, enjoy this. this is one of the warmest days for a while. sunny, light breeze, very enjoyable, temperatures in the 30s and 40s up and down i-95. look at the surge of warm air. midwest, record highs. at 41 to start your morning. in minneapolis. you will get a big chill. the cold front comes on through. where's the cold air? up here in canada. it's been bottled up and been a while since it made a run at us. now, over the next couple of days, it will come to the south. this blue in the map tells us where the cold air is. on black friday, looks like the great lakes, if you're going out black friday shopping, very cold and sweeps to the new england area saturday and sunday. be prepared. after that, we have another shot the middle of next week.

says he wants to keep the wreckage in place if it's stable enough that it would make, in his words, a great tourist attraction. former director of the cia, david petraeus is fighting off cabin fever after his downfall and considering offers of book deals and maybe even a spot on television. it is the first real hurdle for a republican presidential candidate. who wants to end the iowa straw poll? none other than iowa's republican governor, terry br branst branstad. he says it's outdated and nominated congresswoman michele bachmann. helena, montana newspaper has disciplined one of its editors after a story on president obama's trip to asia was altered. the word allegedly was added when referring to the president being born in hawaii. the newspaper calls it a poor attempt at humor never meant to be published.

finally, yesterday's white house turkey pardon, the president had a little fun with the guru who accurately predicted his re-election. >> the winners of the white house turkey pardon were chosen through a highly competitive online vote. once again, nate silver completely nailed it. the guy's amazing. >> that is your morning dish of scrambled politics. markets left on a high note before closing for today's holiday. closed at 12,836 after gaining 48 points. the s&p was up three and the nasdaq added nine. markets are trading overseas today. nikkei shot up 144 points while the hang seng climbed 218. hostess has made their last twinkies and loaves of wonder bread. the products dated back to the late 1800s has received permission from a bankruptcy

and breezy point, new york, those affected by hurricane sandy were shown some holiday hospitality. new york governor andrew cuomo helped volunteers deliver more than 3,000 turkey dinners to those in need. in new york city, hundreds of first responders and red crosses workers were also served up a thanksgiving meal from the city's top chefs. a former model for the price is right just won the ultimate showcase. brandy cochran was awarded $8.5 million in a wrongful termination case against the producers. she worked for seven years and was fired when she tried to return to work after maternity leave. nascar driver, danica patrick, announced her divorce via facebook and received an astounding response. 5,700 likes and filled with comments of support and more than a few marriage proposals. you know, give or take a few, i'm sure. queen elizabeth made oscar

this is about as a warm as it gets. we have cold air for this region of the country come saturday and keep that in mind for your weekend plans. late in the day, a cold front heads through chicago, kansas city, st. louis, down through missouri. you will have a chance of a few showers. it's not going to ruin your thanksgiving day. keep that in mind if you have afternoon outdoor plans. very warm in the middle of the country. you will be wearing shorts in dallas today, 80 degrees on thanksgiving day. looks like we will see very warm conditions in oklahoma and all the way through the midwest. the northwest finally dried you out after a brutal stretch of rainy weather. nice thanksgiving day for you. no problems in l.a. and phoenix. trying to take a look ahead to black friday shopping. any going out late tonight, i know a lot of people lining up, stores open at midnight, from the northern plains, today's warm, tonight, very cold. tomorrow, only in the 20s in areas of the dakotas and minnesota. veronica, bottom line, people in the northern plains in the
